About - Stones
This body of work is from a book-length collection of photographs produced over more than a decade of traveling to photograph the Megaliths and Neolithic standing stones sites of Britain, Scotland, and Brittany, France.
My family heritage is firmly rooted in central England going back many generations. I discovered a strong attraction to this little-known ancient culture - my ancestors - that created thousands of these stone installations. The monoliths and stone circles have an enigmatic nature and a presence that is hard to define. The atmosphere of the landscape has a spiritual presence left by the souls of the people that erected these ancient monuments. The texture of the stones and landscape, which has a tactile quality, is a common thread that runs through the images and remains one of the main attractions to me. By visiting and photographing these haunting places, I feel that I have met the ancients and they were not so unlike us.
Over the years that I have been working on this photography collection, the imaging process has changed. I started with all film-based materials and silver prints. The newer work has become a hybrid of film and digital with digital print output. If the stone builders were here today, they would be using cranes and backhoes to erect their installations. Limited edition prints are available from this premium collection.
